Just like people, computers cannot "talk" (share information) with each other without knowing the same language (settings) to communicate. A computer network consists of two or more computers that can share files, printers, programs, or internet access. There are countless ways to setup a business network, with a variety of purposes. The first step in network design is to evaluate needs to determine what hardware is needed, the most efficient layout of the network, and what method of connection to use.

Each computer on the network will have a network card. Currently, the standard is a 10/100 mbit ethernet network card. Although, if you need faster connection speeds, I can install a 10/100/1000 mbit ethernet network. Other hardware can include a hub or switch to connect the machines together, a router to route an internet connection, a firewall to keep intruders out, and the wiring for the machines. Although CAT5 network cabling is the traditional approach to networking, wireless networks have gained popularity through their ease of setup and low prices. However, with convienience comes sacrifice. There are stories all over the internet of people who setup wireless networking in their office or home without enabling and seting up all of the security features. This leads to people who can get onto your network, use your internet connection and possibly even get access to sensitive documents on your server. A wireless network can be convienient, but it should be setup by a professional to ensure safety.

A basic network of computers sharing files requires a network card in each machine, and a hub or switch to connect them. Those computers can then share files and access to peripherals like printers. This network setup is called a Peer to Peer Network. These networks are good for small offices that want to share internet connectivity and some files and printing.

A Workgroup or Domain network is for larger offices or when there is a need for a centralized server. In this setup, client computers connect and logon to a server or servers, which store files, programs, printing, and handle internet connectivity. This is generally for larger offices where uptime is important and sharing files with several people at once is needed.
